A generic noun is a noun designating all the nouns linked to this generic noun.
Example: fleur is a generic noun for rose, tulipe, coquelicot,…
You can actually read it from the definition in the dictionnary.

In order to find a generic noun, we have to guess in which category it can be found.
Haricot is a noun from the generic word légumes.
